Human Rights and Conservation Framework
The sections below present a selection of key legal texts, instruments of soft law, declarations of principles and other relevant documents supporting the rights of local and indigenous communities involved in in conservation initiatives. The list is not exhaustive, particularly as regards to national laws, but it provides a background against which the legality of conservation activities in the region, in relation to local community rights and livelihoods, can be assessed. All instruments are applicable to all Congo Basin countries considered, unless otherwise stated.
It has been used as a methodological framework for our research but can also be used by others for assessing the level of compliance in protected areas elsewhere.
